Mission Statement: The DEI Committee is dedicated to promoting equitable access to classical learning for all. This committee shall act to ensure that the study of Classics is accessible, inclusive, or otherwise sensitive to the broad and diverse communities of our state. In doing so, this committee shall combat and correct for trends of racism, sexism, and other forms of exclusion, utilizing clear and focused action plans to address shortcomings in our field and the wider world around us.
Goals: Our first action step is text analysis - looking at each of the texts on the market for the secondary level and evaluating them using NYU’s Culturally Responsive Curriculum Scorecard. Once the analyses of a significant amount of those resources has been made, it will be shared out to the wider community of Illinois Latin teachers in order to provide a clear framework to assist in text selection and in mindful and responsive curricular design.
Our Trajectory: - So far the committee met, established goals and our purpose, and analyzed Ecce Romani and Latin For Americans.
Upcoming Meetings: In upcoming meetings, we will be looking at Suburani, Cambridge, and only other texts that teachers are interested in analyzing and discussing.
What Next: After text analysis, we would like to create sample lessons - how do you teach a counter imperialist narrative? How do you discuss difficult topics? Acknowledging bias? Challenging perspectives? In addition, we want to survey and investigate the state of diversity in our own programs across the state and how we could address deficiencies that we have found.
